I have always been very involved in community service. Throughout my high school career I volunteered at numerous places, some dealt with special needs children; others were shelters for abused families, as well as humane societies and many more. I think being exposed to this kind of work at an early age really had an effect on me. I really enjoy doing service work because I feel like I’m actually doing something for someone. For this reason I hope to find a lot of service opportunities here on campus that I can get involved in. Also in a year or two I would like to go on a service trip somewhere outside the United States so I could experience a new culture as well as helping those who need it.
As well as doing service work, when I was in high school I was involved in many sports. Tennis was the one that I devoted basically all of my time to however. I played all four years and I gained the title of captain my senior year. I’ve always enjoyed the sport and seemed to have somewhat of a talent for it so my goal here at Mizzou is to try and play club. Or if nothing else, find some people with as much interest as me and just go play for fun.

Christina Roddy - resume

I think that resumes are important because they provide a side to you outside of your GPA. In fact, in most real-world cases, I feel that a strong resume can be far more important than any academic accomplishment. Whether you could effectively lead and take on organizational tasks is vital in any job, while academic achievements may only come into play in some jobs. GPA can’t be neglected, though, since it reflects how hard you worked and how willingly you cooperated with your professors’ requirements.

I have always been more interested in my classes than in outside involvement, but in the past I’ve volunteered by working at the APA, tutoring for underclassmen, teaching children tennis, and participating in equine therapy.

As far as involvement resources go, I’ve attended fairs (during my orientation and during my first week at Mizzou) that promote different organizations. None of them really interested me, although the Sustainability Club, for instance, caught my friend’s attention. I feel that the school overly promotes their “meaningful” clubs and organizations while neglecting ones that people might join for fun, such as book clubs. (Okay. I would join that for fun, but I’m sure there are other fun things that don’t get much attention.) I’m not particularly interested in building a resume right now, so none of these attracted my attention. As I get closer to deciding my major I may do something that relates to that, such as tutoring (I actually like tutoring, anyway, so it wouldn’t be a bad arrangement).

In high school I was apart of the Track and Field team all four years.  I was involved in a service club where I attended different service sites each quarter. On top of those I was the editor of my school's yearbook where I learned great leadership skills.  I was appointed a staff, had to hold weekly meetings, and be prepared to make our deadlines.  From being so active in high school it made things that much more easier to get involved in college.

Already I have joined the Alpha Delta Pi sorority where we volunteer most of our time and efforts to the Ronald McDonald House, amongst other philanthropies.  I plan to join the volunteer organization United Way as well.  As being a part of United Way I figure it will be something good to add to my resume seeing as it is nationally known.  Since I am a psychology major I have joined one of the psychology clubs where they have speakers/researchers come in and talk to us.  I believe that will be a good way to meet more people in my field.

A resume should have everything and anything you think is worth telling.  Even if the position is not a leadership position I think it is still important because you showed dedication thru participation.  Some companies look for specifics in resumes so it is best to list all because you never know what can make you stand out compared to your peers.
I attended two high schools, one freshman year and the other sophomore thru senior year.  As a freshman, I was still adjusting to the high school and the workload so I did not join that many organizations.  I did although join the track team and helped win a conference title. That was a great experience for me because I met a lot of nice people and observed what it was like to be a leader.  I took that experience with me as I went to my other high school.  There I joined PALs which was an leadership group who assisted   incoming freshman, became a peer mentor, ran track, tutored and also worked 20 hours a week.  I attempted to average a3.0 but I came close.
Here at Mizzou, I plan on joining ASA, which is an organization for African students.  Through this I hope to meet new people and see what the organization has to offer.  I also plan to join the Psychology club, since that is my major.  This should be beneficial to me because I can find people to study with and learn a thing or two. My only fear would be trying to keep a balance with school, organizations and work.  I think if I work hard enough, everything should fall right into place

Things I would like to get involved in on campus are community organizations such as United Way. I went to an organization fair on Lowry Mall sometime last week and it was good to see what is around but I know being involved in volunteer work is what I want to do because it will look good on my resume and I like being apart of something greater than myself. I would also consider doing some sort of fun club like some dance organization or something just to relieve the stress of everyday life.

Throughout highschool I was involved in many different things. I was on the varsity swim team for three years and I also ran cross country. I was captain my junior year for swim and along with sports I was also a member of FCA, DECA, and yearbook. I was yearbook editor my junior and senior year. Junior year I was a print editor and senior year I was design editor and my design took first place in one of the categories for a Colorado design competition.

As a first year student at the University of Missouri, it is extremely important to grasp on to the endless number of opportunities that surround you.  In future endeavors, it will be important to have a resume, which compiles a list of accomplishments, involvements, etc.   In building up my resume this year, I want to get involved in organizations that will not only provide a leadership position for myself, but also broaden my knowledge of journalism as well.  Being a Broadcast Journalism major, the classes I am currently enrolled in provide little insight into the world of journalism.  That being the case, I have taken the liberty of seeking out any form of journalism organization the campus has to offer.  Not only will this enrollment provide for a nice addition to my resume, but it will also enable to me to gain knowledge in areas that I have no prior experience with.
My high school resume has important elements that will be added to my most recent edition, however, perhaps the most important contribution it will make is in regards to formatting.  The format of my high school resume can be used as a tool to help create my most recent copy.  The previous arrangement, which was used in my high school resume, can, in a sense, be duplicated and compiled with new information in the years to come.  The organizational format of a resume is critical.  It must be done so in a manner that any important events are clearly highlighted for those whom it may concern to see.
Over the past few weeks I have been inspired by friends, RA’s, and parents to be involved.  Not only do these groups give me the knowledge I will need for the future, but they also provide the opportunity to meet people with similar interests as myself.  This is extremely important in the world of journalism.  Like they say, connections are everything!

I participated in a few activities in high school, which I would be sure to include in my resume.  I was a reporter for my high school’s weekly TV news station, Greyhound News Network (GNN), my junior year.  Senior year I had the opportunity to be the executive producer of GNN.  I reported, anchored, edited and produced a 10-minute weekly news show.  I gained experience being a leader, as well as journalism experience, which helped me to decide to major in journalism in college.  I was also on the Big Sister/Little Sister planning committee, which assigned senior girls to be “big sisters” to incoming freshman girls and organized events for them to partake in to help the freshmen have an easier transition to high school.  I participated in Jewish Student Union (JSU) throughout high school.  I also played tennis for my high school freshman through senior year, and soccer freshman year.  In addition, I was a member of my high school’s community service club and green club in which I participated in numerous activities with through out my four years.

I joined Alpha Phi sorority at the University of Missouri, which has helped me to become more involved.  Through Alpha Phi I am required to volunteer for different organizations and philanthropies, which I will participate in throughout my four years here.  I have not had the opportunity to join other organizations yet, but there are some that I have seen that I am interested in.  I want to get involved with the Hillel and Jewish Student Organization on campus this year.  At Summer Welcome I was exposed to a variety of different activities and organizations, which interested me.  I hope to later become involved with KOMU.

Involvement in activities on campus is a great resource to put on resumes.  At the University of Missouri, I am already involved in the greek life organization here on campus.  I want to become involved in many other activities besides just my sorority here at the university.  I have noticed that there are many things to become a part of here and that there are endless opportunities to get involved.  One thing i want to become involved in here is the dentistry club.  The dentistry club would be a great thing to be able to put on my resume because i want to eventually get into dentistry school once i have graduated with an undergraduate degree.  The dentistry club is a resource here on campus that is an outlet for aspiring dentistry students to be  able to participate in what may eventually become their career.  The dentistry club would be a helpful resource when i am trying to apply to graduate school and could be an interesting point on my resume that would help me to stand out.
I was very involved in high school and I was able to put a lot of the things that I was involved with on my resume.  I think it is important to have some kind of extracurricular activity on a resume because it shows how that person can be very active after school hours and still keep up good grades.  Extracurricular activities show flexibility and also can convey how responsible a person is.  I played many sports that I kept up all throughout high school so that was important for me to include on my resume.  I also think participation in clubs or organizations in high school is a great thing to include on a resume because it shows leadership.  Student council was important for me to have on my resume because it helped to show that I was able to be a leader and still keep good grades in classes.

Some things that are very helpful when writing a resume would be any type of leadership positions that you might have held. For example, in high school I was the president of club sandwich and I was a kairos retreat leader my senior year. Another beneficiary to a resume would be any awards you were given or any personal achievements that you were given in high school, whether it be for sports, academics, or fine arts. I received a couple high school awards that could be beneficial for people to know about me. You should basically put anything that shows you to be a well rounded responsible person who would be good for the job you are applying to.
Resources around campus that would help build your resume could be any of the club fairs that have happened over the past few weeks or any opportunities you receive via email to get involved in the college community. I went to the journalism fair a couple weeks ago and was able to see some of the clubs that you can join if you're interested enough, and I have received a couple emails from people talking about things going on that would be interesting and good for your resume.
I have already joined a couple things in college and become involved, but I hope to do more eventually. I joined the Greek organization by becoming a part of the alpha chi omega house, and with that I have been exposed to multiple volunteer opportunities and been given the chance to partake in some philanthropy organizations. Being a part of this has actually helped alot because I have been able to meet older girls who are doing the same major that I want to do, and they have been very helpful in pointing me in the right direction of clubs and organizations. Another thing that I hope to join is the komu team because that would allow me to experience my possible major and see if it's something that I'm really interested in pursuing.

I think the best possible way to build a resume while in college is to become involved with campus activities. Not only is it impressive to be able to list your membership in community service or career-prep organizations. it's a great way to make contacts -- both professional and otherwise -- who can back you up as personal references when you apply for jobs later in life. I was too lazy to attend a career fair during freshman welcome week, so any commentary I might offer on "resources" is pretty spartan -- however, I do really appreciate the events that many campus organizations sponsor to draw potential new members. Even setting up outside the Student Center and offering free popsicles like the Women's Center employees did could be considered providing a resource to new students. Especially as a freshman who might not otherwise seek them out, I like that so many campus organizations go out of their way to be accessible and in the public eye.

In my first few weeks here at Mizzou, I've already joined the Little Sisters of the Golden Rose, a mini-sorority with a community-service focus, and written several articles for The Maneater. While I'm still pretty early in my career in both of these organizations, I hope to continue my membership and gain skills, contacts and impressive titles to stick on my resume after graduation. In high school, I participated in an animal-assisted therapy group with my dog, Teddy, and volunteered with a number of programs in the Kearney, NE community -- Summer Reading at the Kearney Public Library, Wild n' Woolly Lamb Camp with Buffalo County 4-H, and (along with the other members of my FCCLA club) a daycare program for autistic children at the Kearney-area Children's Museum. Because I'm fairly young for my schooling level, it's been hard to me to obtain gainful or career-building employment; however, I think that my history of volunteering speaks for itself and might even be more persuasive than job history as I enter the world of professional journalism. I didn't even have to get paid to do all the awesome stuff I did! Hooray!

I'm not sure what else I hope to do as my college career continues, though I will do my best to keep an ear out for interesting opportunities on campus. There are just so many ~*~possibilities~*~!

So far at Mizzou, the resources I've noticed have been the student success center and the many different organizations and clubs that cater to basically ever interest and major. Getting involved in anything like that would look great on a resume, showing involvement and initiative to become successful.
On my resume, I would include activities from high school such as being involved in the National Honors Society, being a captain of the varsity cheerleading squad, working as an editor on the school newspaper, and working with special needs cheerleaders. These activities would demonstrate leadership, service, and dedication and be an advantage to have on my resume.
At Mizzou now, I'm currently involved with a sorority, so putting that on my resume along with philanthropy related activities (which will happen later in the year) will not only be beneficial to networking but also show that I was involved with my school.
As of right now, being in a sorority is taking up a lot of time and energy, so I'm not looking to be involved in anything else at the moment. However, eventually I want to become involved at KOMU and work at the NBC network affiliate to gain experience and training in the field of broadcast journalism.

I would consider myself to have been very involved in highschool. All four years, I played various sports, was a member of different clubs, and had some leadership roles within those areas. In addition, I performed several hours of community service. Because of this, I feel that I have a pretty good idea of different organizations I would like to get involved in at Mizzou. One of my favorite things I was involved in at my highschool was being a student ambassador and a student retreat leader, so I really want to get involved with new students. I would love to be part of the Tour Team or even a Summer Welcome Leader.

Already, I have become part of the Kappa Delta Sorority and am trying to immerse myself fully in all that it has to offer. For instance, I am a member of the intramural volleyball team, and plan to get involved in other sports teams as the seasons change. I also am participating in being involved in preparing things for homecoming by pomping and signing up for float committee.

Outside of Kappa Delta, I am working to maintain an active faith life by going to mass on Sundays and being an active member of the Catholic Student Association. I also am working to explore various areas of my major - Journalism. So far, I have gotten involved in KCOU, and the magazine club. I also receive emails for the Maneater and MOVE magazine but have yet to get involved. Over the next four years, I hope to explore the various journalism opportunities to obtain a better understanding of what I would like to do with my life.

Katelyn Rudolph - Activities That Rock On a Resume

In high school, I wasn't too terribly involved like I feel most kids are nowadays. I wasn't in 20 different clubs, and I wasn't the captain, president or in a leadership role for most of them either. But the activities that I was in, I stuck with for the long haul. Like my high school's newspaper, which I participated in for two and half years where I served as a staff reporter, advancing onto Online Editor and Community Editor later on in my high school career. Newspaper required a lot of my free time during school and outside of school, so participation in other large time-demanding clubs was hard to do. During high school, I was also actively involved with my church's youth group where I served on the Student Leadership Team, which helped organize events and make big decisions for the youth group as a whole. Also, during the summertime I was participant in my church's Ultimate Frisbee league, where I was a team member for two years.

In college, I've only joined a social sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta and my community's hall government so far. But, I plan on joining the design team for the Maneater and the RAMS Steering Committee and maybe playing Ultimate Frisbee at Mizzou here as well. So far, the only informational sessions I've attended about joining clubs and whatnot has been during Summer Welcome and various forms of open houses like the Journalism Open House that was held a few weeks ago. These events have been very helpful in answering my questions about what is available out there for me to get involved with and how I can do so. There also many other organizations that I would love to get involved with, but like I was in high school, I only plan to get involved with one or two large time-restricting organizations and join a few smaller ones as well, and then dedicate the other big junk of my time to schoolwork.
