  1. To be completely honest, I have hardly started my final project. Because I am still unsure of what area I would like to emphasis in the Journalism department, but I am thinking about either magazine or strategic communications. With that said, I was thinking about interviewing someone involved in Justine Magazine. Justine Magazine is a magazine that is regional to the south and headquartered in Memphis. I will probably email someone about scheduling an interview tonight seeing as it will have to be done over the phone. I plan on asking the person I interview the various jobs available at the magazine and what a typical day at the office is like. I would also like to know how long it takes an employee to "find her/his nitch" at the magazine, and really begin to excel in their position. I feel like by talking to someone involved in Justine I will be able to determine if magazine journalism is something I can see myself doing. Also, I feel like, if I'm lucky, I may be able to score an internship with Justine over the summer. If I do not interview someone involved at the magazine, I will probably try to interview with one of the strategic communications professors or someone involved in public relations in Memphis.

  2. I have interviewed Shannon Homolka, the manager of public affairs and marketing at Advocate Health Care in Oak Brook, IL. Since she works directly in the marketing field, she will be able to give me information on marketing that isn't in textbooks or online. She has first-hand experience on the job. She gave me a lot of helpful advice as far as what to do right after college to get started in marketing and what I can do during college to make myself more appealing to possible employers. Here are some questions I asked her: What is your typical schedule? What major/degrees lead to your career? What campus involvement or college experiences would be helpful when entering this field? What is the job outlook for marketing? From this interview I gained a lot of knowledge on marketing that will help me in the future when deciding where in marketing I want to go.

  3. I haven't started on my final project yet because I don't know who I want to interview. A sister of one of my friends graduated from the journalism school this past May with a minor in Italian and a major in Strategic Communications, which is what I plan on doing. However her emphasis was in advertising so I don't know if it would be beneficial to talk to her since my emphasis is Public Relations as of now. I don't know how to find a professor that teaches Public Relations classes to talk to, and I don't know anyone in the field specifically either so I feel like it's almost a dead end. I want to interview a professor that teaches Public Relations so I can better understand the major and see where his students have gone on to work in the past. I'm pretty sure it is the field i'll stick with throughout college but I see this assignment as just a way to better understand how to be successful and ways to get an early start on a career.

  4. In terms of progress with my final project, I’m not even sure where to start. Right now I’m looking at an undergrad degree in science and education, but I’m not sure if I’ll be doing both of those or one of those or neither of those. I’m also considering law school, but I’m not sure of that, either. If I do, I’ll probably ask how a science degree would be applicable to law, because if I were to do pre-law, I wouldn’t want to major in political science, but, rather, something that I could get a job in even I decided against it. That's a big possibility because paying for law school a huge consideration. I might also explore teaching. Teaching English or science is also a strong possibility, and in that case I could interview a teacher. Honestly I don’t know what I want to do; I hope that this interview will give me at least some sense of whether I’d like to work in a given field or not. More information is always helpful. Either way, I’d like to know what skills and traits are important in those fields and how I can start preparing to get a job in them now.
